Weekend Workshops with Artemis Mourat & Aegela Fisher
From Constantinople to Cairo - A Comparison of Turkish and Egyptian Dance and History - An intensive in a 13 hour, 3 day format

FRIDAY to SUNDAY- October 13th to 15th, 2017

The cost for the full 13 hour intensive is $350 +hst ($402.50 CDN)

The cost for a1 hr long workshop is $40 +hst ($46.00 total)
The cost for the 2 hr long workshop is $80 +hst ($92.00 total)

The cost for a 1 hr long lecture is $20 +hst ($23.00 total)
The cost for the 3 hr long lecture is $55 +hst ($57.50 total)

The cost for the 3 lectures (5hrs of instruction) is $80+hst ($92.00 total)

The Gala Show is FREE for all current and former students of Studio Sephira and $13.05 +hst ($15.00 total) for general admission.

Explore the history, music and dance of Turkey with Artemis and of Egypt with Aegela. These two leading artists, who have extensive experience in these countries, and 84 years combined of first hand knowledge, will share their personal archival materials with you in a three day, 13 hour intensive. They will take you from the Ottoman Empire to the Shaabi street dances of Cairo that can be seen today. We will explore where the lines were drawn between these cultures and where the lines are blurred. The workshops will include 8 hours of dance instruction on Ghawazee, Egyptian Oriental, Reda Technique, Shaabi, Turkish Romany (Gypsy) and Turkish Oriental dance. It will also include 5 hours of lecture material, priceless slides and film footage, so you can delve deeper into what truly makes the Egyptian and Turkish dances what they are.

Friday:
6:30-9:30: From Cairo to Constantinople - the history of both styles taught by Aegela and Artemis.

Saturday:
9:30-10:30am: Ghawazee instruction by Aegela
10:45-11:45am: Turkish Romany instruction by Artemis
12:00-1:00pm: Working lunch break - a detailed comparison and contrast between Egyptian Oriental and Turkish Oriental taught by Aegela and Artemis. (brown bag lunch or catering to be determined)
1:00-1:30pm: Rest and shopping break
1:30-2:30pm: Turkish Romany instruction by Artemis
2:45-3:45pm: Classical Egyptian instruction taught by Aegela
7:00-9:00pm – Gala Show

Sunday:
9:45-11:45am: Turkish Oriental instruction taught by Artemis
12:00-1:00pm: Working lunch break - wonderful footage of the famous Egyptian and Turkish Oriental stars and Reda dancers taught by Aegela and Artemis. (brown bag lunch or catering to be determined)
1:00-1:30pm: Rest and shopping break
1:30-2:30pm: Mahmoud Reda - the man, the legend taught by Aegela
2:45-3:45pm: Shaabi - taking it to the streets, from protest to revolution taught by Aegela

Miscellaneous Information:

All days are suitable for dancers of all levels. The history lectures and footage are also suitable for non-dancers, dance ethnologists, re-enactors and history buffs.

Students should bring veils (zills are optional) and a notebook. Participants can brown bag their lunches or opt for the catering option during working lunch.

Please no video or audio taping of classes or lectures. Videoing the show by the sponsor is allowed but this cannot be posted to YouTube without our permission.
