Circular Veil Bellydance
Monday February 19, 6:16-7:15pm
In this 14 week class we will work on Circular Veil technique and choreography with the goal of performing at the following events:
- Danceast Annual Student Recital on June 9th & 10th
- Yoga Fest on the Moncton Riverfront on July 28th
- Studio Sephira Student Showcase (TBA)

Class description:
The technique component of the class will include instruction on manipulating your circular veil in ways that will bring out the fiery and passionate qualities that this wonderful prop can bring to your dance practice. In the Choreography component of the class we will work on an original piece choreographed by Barb.

Performance information:
Everyone who takes the class is invited to perform at the above events (as well as any other opportunities that may come up in the interim) but please note that performing is NOT a prerequisite for taking the class. Clear deadlines will be set so that students who wish to perform (or not - no pressure!) at a particular event can indicate their commitment to be a part of the fun. Any additional classes or rehearsal times that are required to perform will be announced at the same time as the deadline dates. The costume requirement for the Circular Veil performance is: black harem pants, black top and red hip scarf.

You will be able to place an order with the Studio in March to purchase these items if you wish. You can also take the time to make them yourself if you sew or you can purchase them elsewhere on your own. The Studio will supply a red and black Circular Veil in liquid metal fabric for the performances but you can also decide to make your own if you choose. Instructions will be given if the option of creating your own costuming appeals to you.

A student must complete a Beginner class at the Studio or the equivalent with another Bellydance teacher. American Cabaret Style Bellydance
Monday, February 19, 7:30-8:30pm
In this 14 week class we will work on American Cabaret Style technique and choreography with the goal of performing at the following events:
- Danceast Annual Gala Show on May 5th & 6th
- Mosaic Festival at the Moncton Riverfront on July 21st
- Studio Sephira Student Showcase (TBA)

Class description:
The technique component of the class will include instruction on specific movement vocabulary, finger cymbals and veil work. In the Choreography component of the class we will re-work an original piece choreographed by Barb to a medley of the song Desert Queen that was originally performed it in the 2017 Annual Student Show.

Performance information:
Everyone who takes the class is invited to perform at the Mosaic Festival and the Student Showcase (as well as any other opportunities that may come up in the interim. However, to perform as guests in the May Gala alongside Danceast, students must show that they are able to perform the piece on their own and attend a special full day workshop on April 29th.
Please note that performing is NOT a prerequisite for taking the class. Clear deadlines will be set so that students who wish to perform (or not - no pressure!) at a particular event can indicate their commitment to be a part of the fun. Any additional classes or rehearsal times that are required to perform will be announced at the same time as the deadline dates. The costume requirement for the American Cabaret performance is: gold bra and belt set, full circle skirt and finger cymbals.

You will be able to place an order with the Studio in March to purchase these items if you wish. You can also take the time to make them yourself if you sew or you can purchase them elsewhere on your own. The Studio will supply the silk rectangular veils for the performances but you can also decide to use your own if you choose. Instructions will be given if the option of creating your own costuming appeals to you but please be warned that this does take a considerable time commitment.

Prerequisites, Costs and Registrations:
A student must complete a Beginner class at the Studio or the equivalent with another Bellydance teacher. The cost of the class is $215 (taxes incl) before February 18th and $235 (taxes inclu) after February 19th. Students who worked this piece the Spring of 2017 receive a discount that brings the cost to $175 (taxes inclu). Registration for this class is now open and to reserve your spot make your payment with:

Tribal Style Bellydance
Wednesday February 21, 8:10-9:10pm
In this 14 week class we will work on slow and fast movement vocabulary, including finger cymbal technique, with the goal of performing at the following events:
- Danceast Annual Student Recital on June 9th & 10th
- Yoga Fest on the Moncton Riverfront on July 28th
- Studio Sephira Student Showcase (TBA)

Class description:
The technique component of the class will include instruction on approx. 20 basic movements found in Improvisation Tribal Style (ITS). We will spend time in each class exploring and embodying the movements with drills.
In the improvised component of the class we will work the movements so that students can learn how to follow someone who is leading the dance, as well as how to take and relinquish the lead themselves.
In the choreography component of the class, students will learn a new piece that will help embody the qualities of this unique style of Bellydance.

Performance information:
Everyone who takes the class is invited to perform at the above events (as well as any other opportunities that may come up in the interim) but please note that performing is NOT a prerequisite for taking the class. Clear deadlines will be set so that students who wish to perform (or not - no pressure!) at a particular event can indicate their commitment to be a part of the fun. Any additional classes or rehearsal times that are required to perform will be announced at the same time as the deadline dates. The costume requirement for the Tribal Style performance is: tribal style skirt, black top and hip scarf.

You will be able to place an order with the Studio in March to purchase these items or you can purchase them elsewhere on your own. Links to online resources with instructions can be given if the option of creating your own costuming appeals to you, but please note that creating a 25 yard tribal style skirt is a huge commitment.

Turkish Style Bellydance

In this 14 week class we will work on embodying Turkish Oriental Style movement vocabulary and choreography with the goal of performing at the following events:

Beginner Bellydance
Wednesday March 7, 6:40-8:00pm
The next 6:40-8:00 pm Wednesday evening class starts on February 21st. This 14 week class is the perfect introduction to bellydance for the non-dancer - no prior dance experience required. It is also and excellent class for women who have previously taken bellydance classes and want to review the basics as well as for all dancers have studied in other dance styles.

At the beginner level we have fun together learning the key concepts and basic moves of the dance required to move on to the next level. Each week we will experience full warm up & cool down exercise and in between we will learn different isolations & steps until we are ready to start using them in a short choreography & improvisation exercises. At this level, props such as zills (finger cymbals) and veil are also introduced and some historical & cultural information about the art form is shared.

Barbara Aubie has been bellydancing for 20 years and has had training in a wide variety of subjects with teachers such as Morocco, Sahra Kent, Artemis Mourat, Yasmena Ramzy, Elise Olmi, Nita Collins, Tara Harper, Amir Thaleb, Elizabeth Stong, Hadia, Rayhan Tzuzu, Aziza, Princess Farhana, Amar Gamal, Cathy Linfeild, Nawal Doucette, Leslie M, Tarik Sultan, Denise Enan, Bellyqueen, Shira, Nadira Jamal, Bozenka, Abira, Mira Betz and many more.

Although well versed in Egyptian and Turkish styles of Middle Eastern Dance, Barbara specializes in the Vintage Oriental Style, also known as American Caberet, or Vintage American Bellydance. This older style of Oriental dance is versatile & passionate and was performed in the United States beginning with the 1960s. It is now a rare but valuable style from the Oriental dance world of America that is slowly making a comeback on the international scene.

Barbara has a BA in History/Sociology, is well experienced in a number of body-mind healing modalities and has worked 10+ years with women in the non-profit sector. She combines all her training with her Bellydance practice to give you a safe, fun & well-rounded experience that includes a lot more than the fundamentals of the art form.
