Studio Sephira is Turning 20 this Year!! Let's Celebrate Together!!
I hope you all had a very good Summer and that you are feeling ready to welcome the Fall. I wanted to write a little letter to give a recap the past couple of months and to let you know what I am planning for classes and performances at the Studio over the next little while.
As most Studio Sephira students already know, the first thing I did when Covid 19 arrived in the region was to bring the students who were in the middle of a session together onto an online platform. I was happy to welcome those who made the transition but dearly missed those who could not and I will be connecting with everyone from the Winter 2020 session soon to follow up on some things with them. As a supplement to the students in these classes and a dance resource to other students, I posted some Instructional videos that teach variations of the class choreography and I live streamed an Introduction to Bellydance class and a Continuing Fun class in the Studio Sephira Student Community Group on Facebook.
When the Spring 2020 session was scheduled to start, I decided to offer two weekly online classes free of charge to all current and former students of the Studio because I wanted to create a space where women in this community could move and connect with others during a difficult time. I was very grateful to everyone who was able to attend and was happy to provide such a space for those who expressed how much it was appreciated.
As the end of June approached I could see that this service was no longer needed as much as in the previous months because we were lucky / resilient and got the virus under enough control so that we could start to re-connect in person with friends and family. I felt that it would be OK to take July and August off from teaching so I could find the time to ground and center. I felt the need to re-group from all the changes that we were all experiencing and to take a step back so I could better plan for the Fall. During this time, I started a new job that I can do from home and I focussed on eating well, visiting with my Mother, resting, embodying a daily dance / movement / workout practice and enjoying as much time as possible outside in nature.
The past 2 months have gone by fast and, just like every year, September is arriving in what feels like a blink of an eye and classes will be starting up again very soon. But unlike any other time in the past 20 years since the dance school opened, teaching, performing and connecting with others at the Studio and in the larger community will be very different this season. I have thought a lot about the many scenarios of how the 20th Anniversary year could unfold and have decided to move forward with offering online classes for now. Rest assured that I will be continuously re-evaluating this decision as the season advances because I miss seeing and dancing with everyone in person but I know in my heart that this is the best choice for myself and the school for the time being.
So, what are the online classes going to look like -you may ask?!
Well, I am going to be offering a series of short sessions ranging from 3 to 5 weeks in length where we can focus on choreography, technique and improv dance. I already have a short list of subjects in mind but I want you to tell me what you want to learn and I will see if it is something that I can share on this new platform. It could be anything that you want to explore from either the AmCab, Turkish or Egyptian styles of dancing and can include things like history lessons, book club gatherings or sewing instructions. I am also open to working with students one on one or in small groups if someone wants to create that experience for themselves. I would make the video from most classes available for students to review online for a week and would organize online shows of the choreographies that are taught.
The classes will be scheduled at various times during the week because I am going to be working in my new job and taking on some contract work. The first 2 offerings will be choreographies and they will run for 5 weeks from 6:30-7:30pm on Monday and Wednesday nights starting the week of Sept 7th. Both classes are open to students who have completed Introduction to Bellydance or the equivalent with another teacher and they each cost $75 (HST incl). I am offering a $10 discount to students who decide to dance on both nights. Contact me to register and to arrange your payment via e-transfer, credit card or pay pal. You can find more information on these and other upcoming classes by going to Classes and Events on the Studio Sephira website or to Events on the Studio Sephira Facebook page.
So, what about Shimmy Mob, the Yasmina Ramzy workshop, Nutcracker and all the other extra fun things we are always up to at the Studio -you may also ask?!
Well, because of safety measure in place for Covid 19 a lot of these extra fun things are postponed for the moment. We made the announcement last week that the Be The Canvas weekend workshop originally scheduled for October is postponed until next August and I’ve been informed that all the yearly Danceast stage productions where we are invited guests artists are also postponed until further notice.
Shimmy Mob however has announced a free live interactive online event that will take place on Saturday, September 26th. It is open to everyone, even if you have never participated in Shimmy Mob before, and you can find information and get your ticket here: [http://tinyurl.com/y6e6s2ae]. For the members of the 2020 Moncton Shimmy Mob Team, take note that I will be posting a message in our Facebook group shortly to set up our t-shirt distribution and get our upcoming dance plans in motion so keep an eye out for that in the days to come.
As a final note in this letter…
I will admit that the upcoming year looks nothing like the 20th Anniversary celebrations I was planning but I want you all to know that I am very much looking forward to dancing with everyone who will join me this season to celebrate. I appreciate everyone who has been a part of the journey so far and I look forward to creating new memories and art together during the year ahead.
